Tax and your return
Every country does it differently. But there are only four things a government can take.
Four points of attack
There are exactly four things a government can tax when you invest. The capital gain you make. The income it throws off, like dividends and interest. The wealth you hold, whether or not it earned anything. And the act itself, through a tax on every buy and sell. Almost every country uses a mixture of two or three of these.
That mixture fully decides which behaviour is expensive: where the gain is taxed, deferring pays; where the transaction is taxed, sitting still pays; and where the holding is taxed, you pay in a year you lost money too. So find out which of the four apply to you first, not what the rates are.
Source: Rates and exemptions change almost every year; check them with your own tax authority.
The tax you never see
Buy a share or fund from another country and that country often deducts tax on the dividend before it reaches you. It's called withholding tax, and it appears nowhere on your statement: you simply receive less. Treaties between countries determine how much you can reclaim or offset, and how much sticks also depends on where your fund is domiciled. Two funds tracking the same index can therefore differ measurably every year โ sometimes by more than the difference in management fees everyone does look at.
What helps everywhere
Choose deliberately between a fund that distributes dividends and one that reinvests them: where payouts are taxed, reinvesting avoids a taxable moment and some admin. Look at where a fund is domiciled, because that decides the withholding tax. Use whatever tax-advantaged account your country offers, but read its price: usually your money is locked until a certain age. And trade less, because that's the only dial that works in every system. The rest is a conversation with someone who knows your situation, not something an app can fill in for you.
Stocky says
Keep your annual statements. Reconstructing what you bought and when costs more time later than it saves now.
Remember this
- A country can tax four things: gains, income, holdings, or the transaction.
- The mixture decides which behaviour is expensive โ not the rate.
- Withholding tax on foreign dividends is invisible and often costs more than fees.
There is a quiz for this lesson
3 questions that check whether it stuck. They live in the app, because a quiz nobody grades teaches nothing.
