Lesson 5 of 5 · 6 min read
Risk vs. reward
More expected return almost always means more risk. Understand that balance before you jump in.
The golden rule
There is no high return without risk. If someone promises you 'guaranteed 20% per month', it's almost certainly a scam. The higher the possible return, the greater the chance you'll see a (temporary) loss.
Risk is not the same as danger
In investing, risk mostly means variability (volatility): how strongly does the value fluctuate? Stocks fluctuate more than bonds, crypto more than stocks. Fluctuation isn't a problem if you have time to recover.
Match risk to your horizon
If you don't need the money for 20 years, you can handle more fluctuation. If you need it in 2 years, choose something calmer. Your investment horizon — the time until you need the money — determines how much risk is sensible.
Remember this
- High return without risk doesn't exist; higher return almost always means more risk.
- Risk in investing is mostly variability (volatility), not the same as danger.
- Your investment horizon determines how much fluctuation is sensible.
- 'Guaranteed 20% per month' is a classic sign of a scam.
There is a quiz for this lesson
3 questions that check whether it stuck. They live in the app, because a quiz nobody grades teaches nothing.
