Risk management & position sizing
Surviving comes before winning. Whoever never takes a big hit lets compounding do its work.
The math of loss is cruel
If you lose 50%, you don't need 100% gain to be back at zero — not 50%. Big losses are disproportionately harmful. That's why investing over the long term is as much about limiting losses as about capturing gains.
Did you know?
From €100 to €50 is -50%. Back to €100 is +100%. The deeper the fall, the steeper the climb back.
Position sizing: never everything on one card
Position sizing is how much of your portfolio sits in a single investment. If you put 50% into one stock and it halves, you lose 25% of everything. By capping positions (e.g. max a few percent per individual stock), no single miss can wreck your portfolio.
In practice
With a maximum of 3% per individual stock, a stock that goes to zero costs you 3% — annoying, but survivable and recoverable.
Your emergency buffer is your real risk management
You already know: emergency buffer first, then invest. That's no coincidence. With a buffer you never have to sell in a forced way at a low point because your car breaks down. The buffer protects your investment against your own life.
Stocky says
The biggest investor mistake isn't 'picking the wrong stock', but 'being forced to sell at the worst moment'. A buffer prevents that.
Know your own panic threshold
Before you step in, ask yourself: at how much of a drop will I panic-sell? Build your portfolio so that in a realistic crash (stocks can do -30 to -50%) you don't bail out. A portfolio you can't stick with is the wrong portfolio.
It all comes together
Allocation chooses your risk, diversification lowers unnecessary risk, rebalancing keeps it on target, and position sizing plus a buffer ensure one blow doesn't knock you out. Together they let compounding keep working uninterrupted — and that, not the golden tip, is what makes investors rich.
You put in $36,000. The other $42,139 is pure compound growth. Time does most of the work.
Remember this
- Big losses are disproportionately harmful: -50% requires +100% to be back at zero.
- Cap your position sizing so no single miss can wreck your entire portfolio.
- An emergency buffer prevents you from being forced to sell at a low point.
- Allocation, diversification, rebalancing and position sizing together let compounding keep working uninterrupted.
